TAMA [tae-muh]

Tama County, named after Taimah, a 19th century Meskwaki leader, is home to the Meskwaki Settlement today, a sixeable community. The Meskwaki Settlement is not a reservation but a soveriegn nation with its own laws, constitution, and court system. Today, the settlement stretches over 8,000 acres of land. About 1,400 members belong to the Meskwaki tribe, with around 800 people living on-site.
Beyond the settlement, nestled in the rolling hills of Tama County are fourteen active communities full of outdoor activities, boutiques, tasty bites, and historical sites along with seasonal activities throughout the year. Check out the rest of our site to Travel Tama County to the full extent!
